Jonathan Sterne, in his article on the Digital Divide, points out the normative notion of whiteness which often pervades the advertisements and assumptions of internet providers. The rhetoric which they use casts the white individual as the “normal” user of such tools, assuming that non-white individuals use the internet only secondarily. The same phenomenon can be seen in media such as journalism and television. Investment in technology is explored through the lens of white privilege, which tends to assume that all of its users are of one kind. As of late, however, internet providers have pushed for a multicultural internet, one where people of every race, ethnic group, and culture can come together.
